President’s Message
Happy Mother’s day to all of you! I hope you get to enjoy some DOWN time with family, friends, and loved ones. However, after that things really start to kick up. Schools are winding down, graduations are around the corner, and summer is on its way. However, for CAPA our conference is well underway. We are excited about our speakers and the number of Vendors who have already started to fill up the exhibitor room.
For members, registration is open and we have extended the Early Bird Deadline to May 18th. So please take advantage of that opportunity. Several associations have awarded winners to receive a free registration to the Conference. If you are a winner, please be sure to send in your registration form along with your Certificate so we know what lunch and tracks you are taking. Members of REAP and SVPA are working hard to put this event together for you and we are hoping for another sell out crowd. Note there is a 2-step process online for registering this year. So let’s beat last years attendance.
Paralegal Definition
CAPA’s longtime goal of obtaining a statutory definition of the paralegal/legal assistant titles came to fruition in 2000 with the passage of AB 1761, now codified as California Business and Professions Code sections 6450 et seq.
B&P §6450 has been applied in California courts in cases where paralegal fees were denied or disallowed because the paralegals failed to meet the requirements of §6450.
Persons considering enrolling in paralegal courses should confirm their potential school is compliant with code requirements. Paralegals from other states who are moving to California should review the code to make sure they will be compliant.
